Dark strip on monitor - fix?
« on: April 21, 2009, 05:43:02 AM »
Ok, I have this problem with one of my monitors having a dark strip running down the right hand side.  It is my second screen with my dual setup and always thought it was to do with that, but since I plugged it in separate PC I realise it is the monitor.  It isn't very old and I found this site that mirrors my issue but the sole solution there is a bit vague.

Anyone know how to fix this easily?

Thanks

It is pretty much like the example I posted.  In my case it is about an inch and a half wide coming from the right hand side of my LCD monitor, and is grey (transparent).  It actually looks like a shadow is being cast from something beside it.  As for the resolution, it has that knackered comp using it at present and the resolution has been changed 3 or 4 times during its cleansing of Vundo - that's the reason I noticed it was more than just a windows dual screen bug.

Any ideas?

Not that I think it'd cause such a uniformed distortion but, in it's primary location, was it near anything magnetic that might not have been shielded properly?

Not by anything that is giving out enough magnetism to cause it.  It is the monitor by the Brandy bottle and hardly ever on as I only use it for Maya and ocassionally PS.

It seems this problem is rife not unheard of but the only solution I have found is the one in the link I gave, but I am not entirely sure what he's on about?

It is no real biggy as it just looks like a part of my screen has sunglasses on, but I thought it might be something easy to fix.

There may be hope, I have read that it is a possibility it is the cable?  That is possible as both comps used the same lead, but I think it is a bit of a long shot.  I'll give it a go tomorrow.

I thought that the leads to my monitors were removable, they're not.  This doesn't mean that it is not the problem, just that it is too much trouble to fix considering I can replace it for ?80.  I have read though that it could be a "backlight" issue but I am not sure how that works and if it can be fixed?

This is what it looks like:

Any ideas you brainy lot?

these are not the fix, they are suggestions:

1) center your screen, usually knobs below the monitor or in advanced ones the software in the monitor's menu, also, application like those with video cards or in windows can do this.

2) run a video/dvd application and change your screen aspect ratios. If you don't have a media player you can use some online video sites to do this.

3) if the above two don't work, use a blackout/black screen saver on it for some time or you can also run a white one. Putting it into sleep mode is a similar thing as well.

4) if all fails, again put it in the dual mode, maybe it'll correct itself.

Thanks for the input DS.

The issue is local to the monitor as it still appears when connected to other computers.  I have adjusted all the available settings on the monitor itself and there is little improvement.

Your 3rd suggestion is interesting and akin to the "fix" in the link that I added in my original post:

Quote
I could fix this.  I played a white screen(by connecting my computer) through out the night and it got fixed by the next day.  It is basically because you play a lot of 4:3 ( default old TV ratio) video. Always make sure to play everything in "overscan" mode

And I will look into that possible fix tonight.

I have read about this happening to many people in my search for a solution, and I am disappointed that no one seems to know exactly why it happens and how to avoid it.  This second monitor is hardly ever on as it is the screen I use for tool sets, and considering how little contructive work I do, it was luck to have been turned on at all!?.

Update.

This evening I turned the brightness and contrast up full, and set the screen to white.  I disabled the screensaver and left it on unrefreshed.  I kept checking to see if it was improving but not much was happenning, and then after about an hour my power saving setting turned off the monitors which I had forgetten to disable.  I nudged the mouse to reactivate them and guess what?  The line has disappeared??  This was by no means a gradual thing and a bit confusing, and I haven't yet normalised its settings or changed my desktop back so I am not sure it's properly fixed - I don't want to push my luck yet...

Yep, it's definitely fixed:

Now, who can tell me why this happened or what the problem was?  There is no explanation I can find anywhere on the web, but I really want to know what occured here as I was inches away from buying a new one that I can ill afford.

'Tain't fickst - it still looks like a PC.

My kids are starting to learn about computers, and I don't want them to turn out as oddballs.
