A friend of mine said that her mother encouraged her to eat the crusts on the grounds that it would "help her sing better."

Whatever works.

My life may have lacked "childhood magic" or whatever, but I'm very thankful my parents never pulled crap like that six.

I mean seriously, how would that EVER work? "Maybe you'll get extreme ergot poisoning and your whacked out screams will score you a music contract?"

I have a great dentist.  He says he regularly sees patients who have cracked teeth eating crusty French bread and the like, so, eating crust could mean a trip to the dentist.  I never much liked the crusts of white bread.  I ate a lot of that when I was growing up.  The whole Wonder Bread years thing was big in my generation:  pb&j or baloney, who knew what kinds of vile stuff got put in bread.  But the crusts were never anything but ugly dry and bitter spongy brown stuff.  Now that I live near a good french bakery, I'm happy to eat the crusts, but that was then and now is now.

Never really understood the need to cut a sandwich at all, in fact I kind of prefer it whole.

I like biting in to that narrow wedge.  Works for sandwiches, cheesecake, pie, etc.  Like there's something magically concentrated about the vertex of an acute triangle.

You prefer eating the heart of the sandwich first, I can respect that.

Well, I guess by cutting my pies in quarters I've been missing out  ;D
