WinAmp Problems
« on: June 25, 2009, 07:23:46 PM »
Recently I installed an XP OS, and winamp, however whenever I run Winamp it shuts down, it says:

Quote
Winamp has encountered a problem and needs to close.

Error signature

AppName: winamp.exe    AppVer: 5.5.5.2460    ModName: unknown
ModVer: 0.0.0.0    Offset: 0000008c

I have had it playing alright both on XP and Vista, though that XP was another build.
I tried to google it, but it hasnt helped !! any suggestions?
At the least, whats a good player for FLV files other than WinAmp? What do you guys use?

MPC (media player classic) can pretty much handle any file you throw at it.

I've been satisfied with it for several years now.

Be sure and get the k-lite codec pack though, and make sure it's the full version.

When you're installing it, be sure and select the "lots of stuff" profile.

good luck. :)

It's pretty awesome. I've been using it for all of my vids/music for the past few years.

Handles everything I have ever thrown at it.

It has so many features that I can't think of at the moment, but you'd be satisfied going through the list.

Beat that cccp! >:D

I'd agree the codecs should work if you don't want to change to a new player. I use Foobar like Disco does. I used to use winamp, but it started getting misbehaving more then I had patience for.

I tend to use prefer VLC from www.videolan.org .  No external codecs needed.  I avoid codec packs as I remember back about 5 years ago, if you installed a codec pack, you ran the risk of really fubar'ing your system.

You might also just try uninstalling and reinstalling WinAmp again.  I have generally been disappointed with WinAmp ever since Frankel sold it to AOL.

Some of the early codec packs were more like malware...once they were on the system there was no way to get them out gracefully.  It's actually been several years (about 10 or so) since I last used a codec pack so I can imagine they've improved (and the one you mentioned, hmed, is the one I hear suggested often.  I just tend to stick with VLC nowadays.

Oh I see. Yeah, that would make sense, codec packs get lots of hits so any jerkoff that wants to take advantage of that has a great opportunity. But yeah, I've been using k-lite codec pack for several years now and it's been fine for me. :)
I also make sure to download from clean sources just for extra measures.
Thanks for that warning though. I'll keep it in mind. :)

Like I said, k-lite codec pack has been great for me these past several years. Unless the trojan has been in hibernation all this time, David should be fine. :D (yes, i know you were kidding ;) mostly teasing you back ;) )

MPlayer, like VLC works without codecs too, although the Windows port seems to come with SMPlayer now, which works incredibly slow on my system.  Without SMPlayer, MPlayer is very fast, I used to use it for HD videos on my lesser PC.

Now Zoidberg is the popular one!

Right. forgot about that. :P
It can also be downloaded as a stand alone player and is very capable as a stand-alone.
It handles HD very good too, actually, now that I think of it, I remember that I first started using MPC by itself rather than in conjunction with k-lite codec pack. So yeah, that's an added plus. I still have a very old version of the codec pack on my pc, so i've never heard of SMPlayer being included with MPC. It's pretty clunky though, I had to use it once before. Terrible piece of .......software.  ::)
