Good Remakes/Bad Remakes
« on: September 06, 2009, 10:41:37 PM »
I must say that I think the Rob Zombie Halloween remakes are far superior to the originals. Halloween 2 just came out and I am refreshing myself on 1 before I watch 2 and it is FREAKIN AWESOME!! No comparison to the original, just flawless......well for a horror film anyway.

I like Robs style of writing.
Hes disfuntional, not slicked up, and raw.
To me thats a breath of fresh air from these film school types that go by all the usual ways of making movies.
Most you see these days are either all the same , or someone decides to remake it in their own image ( ie Day of the Dead in 2007).

I got to say though, My Bloody Valentine sucked compared to the original, so did Last House On The Left ( whats wrong Wes? Needed some money or something?)
Im afraid to see the Nightmare On Elm Street remake,, But I probably will just to pick it apart.
As for the propensity for a studio to do a remake,, I just have one thing to ask...
Is there a shortage of  original ideas out there or something?
I keep my standards low.
That way im never disapointed.

The 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead is very cool, and the 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead was okay...

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory had some good things about it, but I still find it unnecessary due largely to the '70s version being genius.

The Denzel Washington Manchurian Candidate is pretty good.

I agree that the 70's version was genius.

I liked the remake, or should I just say modern version instead since lots of elements were swapped or skipped. But I really liked it just as well, and I don't really see it as a remake since it's distinctly different from the original. With Johhny Depp, you know there has to be a twist somewhere along the story line, but his style is flawless though which makes the movie funny and interesting.

Agreed.

But, as much as I like Johnny Depp, Gene Wilder ruled as Willy Wonka... :D

Although the new one did have the squirrel nut sorting room from the book.

I agree completely.

Generally remakes piss me off for being unnecessary and ruining the integrity of the original, but
I'll say The Magnificent Seven and The Thing equaled and with the latter excelled beyond the original.
Size, it doesn't matter to me so long as I get it...Gotta go now.

I loved how the narrator's deep voice was that of an Oompa-Loompa.  :D

Thanks for reminding me of The Thing, which is a fantastic remake and one of my favorite movies. And you're right is is much beter than the black and white one.

But how 'bout Invasion of the Body Snatchers?

That's been re-made something in the realm of 5-6 times now, and some of them are actually pretty good. The original rocks, and the special effects of the hatching pod people is still really creepy. The 70s Donald Sutherland version isn't bad, either and the recent one with Nicole Kidman wasn't bad.

And I think we've found consensus that Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is the shizznit... :P

I've never seen the Nicole Kidman version, but those the original and the '78 are both great  :)

I like both versions of The Fly as well  ;D

On the subject of the Wonka movies, I'm not really sure you can call the Depp one a remake of the Wilder one. It's just an adaptation of the book.

On remakes, I thought Cape Fear was a good remake. I'm not saying it was better than the original, but it was a good film in it's own right.

I thought I'd post this here, since I'm not sure about the hazy line between remake and rip-off. It's interesting that The Lion King, Cars & Wall-E are accused of "borrowing" from earlier movies. Personally, I think you can probably find similar plots to most if not all movies.
