I watched "Up" for the first time last night too.  I thought it was a really good movie, but not as fun/interesting as some of Pixar's other films.

I thought Doug was really funny. And I cried in one part. And I thought the idea of the story was interesting how it pulled together some real life news lifted events and real life deeper issues. But other Pixar movies will probably stay my favorites too.

My favorite movie of the year is probably still Star Trek.. but there's a ton I haven't seen.. so, I might wait until I'm caught up to say for sure

My favorite comedy is still Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

The Big Lebowsky comes in second.

It was pretty awesome that Christopher Plummer voiced Charles Muntz (who looked very much like Errol Flynn)

None of it? Not when Walter accidentally trashed the wrong car? Or when the cremate dashes blew back in their faces? Or the way Philip Seymour Hoffman delivers his lines? I can?t remember the exact quote.. but one line is something like ?we?ve been urgently searching for you dude?.. it?s one of the funniest line deliveries ever

That's a shame if it got overblown for you so that it was a letdown when you saw it.

It ranks among my very favorite Pixar flicks... 

There's something about The Big Lebowski - either you get it, or you just don't:

And I recently watched Pandorum with Dennis Quaid and Ben Foster.

Not a terribly great movie overall and a really cheesy ending.

It's about humanity having to abandon Earth due to overpopulation and sending huge groups of people suspended in hypersleep to another inhabitable planet (all of this is told in text before the film begins, by the way).

Basically, Quaid and Foster are awakened out of their long hypersleep and one of the after effects is that they've lost a great deal of their memories. So for instance, they know they're pilots, but can't remember where they're going or why. This is a great plot device as the characters tend to remember they know how to do complex things in the nick of time. The ship is in disrepair and seems to have intermittent power surges, but otherwise is pretty dark. The whole movie is pretty murky , in fact.

Anyway, they realize that they are stuck in the personnel hold and without power they can't get the doors open to get to the bridge and find out what happened to the ship. So Ben Foster gets the job of crawling around in the walls until he finds a way through.

He then finds out that there are some kind of lethal humanoid creatures on board that are extremely fast and seem to kill and eat anything that moves (the origin of these things is never revealed, incidentally). He finds other people that have awoken at previous times and are trying to survive in the bowels of the ship, but they are as clueless as he is about what's going on. But they do help Foster get the the reactor chamber, which will restore the ship. So then the flick just ends up being one frantic chase after another through grimy machinery.

And there are a host of irritating things:

To keep from being found by the creatures, Foster and company have to speak in whisper, but the filmmakers still thought it necessary to leave in the ambient sounds of the ship and the machinery so often times you can't hear the dialogue. Also, Foster has a weapon that clamps around his forearm/wrist, and yet whenever he's struck he manages to keep dropping the goddamn thing! Also, they use the Batman Returns fighting technique of never quite letting you actually see what's going on during the action sequences. And then there are all the scenes with Dennis Quaid!

Anyway, the sub-story is that another effect of prolonged hypersleep is a condition known as Pandorum, which causes the sufferer to believe that everyone and everything is imbued with an inherent evil and needs to be destroyed (yeah, I kinda rolled my eyes, too). They go into the fact that at some point in the past one of the ships sent from Earth had its crew succumb to Pandorum and they eventually destroyed that ship. So there's a bit of overwrought tension as Quaid tries to determine if he is suffering from the effects... *Yawn*

None of this is ever really resolved and it turns out that the ship had actually reached the new planet over 900 years before the flick begins, but went down in an ocean instead of landing on dry land. (How the ship was supposed to land at all with the flight crew in suspended animation was never really discussed).

Needless to say, it's an Eden-like ending for our heroes as escape pods bob to the surface of the ocean of of their plush, pristine new planet.

Meh.

I also watched Astro Boy and wished I hadn't.

I've never been a huge fan of the manga nor the anime, but I love the guy who created the character, Osamu Tezuka, so I took a look.

While Tezuka did his best to make the manga/anime palatable for all ages, this movie is definitely just for kids.

The story is so-so and really predictable. Some of the set-up doesn't make sense, for instance, a certain segment of humanity lives aboard this floating island that has robots doing most of the physical labor. When the robot malfunctions, it's basically tossed overboard. These discarded robot carcasses now litter the entire surface of the planet. Which leads one to the question of where they're getting the raw materials to make these robots. But then again, if you're some less-than-inquisitive kid (which more and more seem to be) the inconsistency of this little detail wouldn't even raise an eyebrow.

And the voice acting is really stale. Nicolas Cage, Donald Sutherland and Kristen Bell gave performances similar to those in the flick 9, where they simply lent their straight voice to the character and recited the lines rather than become the character through interest in the project. Only Nathan Lane seems to bring something to the table, but then his character is a 2-dimensional pseudo-villain, so there's not much for him to work with...

I really would like to know what a Japanese fan of the manga/anime would say about this American 'reimagining' of the character and concepts.

I saw Pandorum. And I got to say one thing about your review of it. You are spot on accurate!
 Its like they tried to make a Ridley Scott movie and failed miserably.
 It was a movie they should pay YOU to sit through.
I watched about 20 minutes of it and decided that it was lame. BUT,,,I allways triy to find the good points of every movie.
For one,, I liked the creatures,, or whatever they were,, no one ever really said.
 I think thats about all I liked,,no ,,wait,, I liked the girl that made it out at the end,, she was kinda cute.
 I think that was the only redeaming value the movie had. If you can call it that.

I think what really annoyed me is that there could be a competent sci-fi flick made from some of what was done in Pandorum, but no one made the effort.

I don't know if it's the writers or the audience that has become lazy. Are filmmakers not bothering to complete their visions because the audience doesn't seem to care either way?

Weve been force fed so much Hollywood pap that even the audiences dont expect very much anymore.
American cinima is pretty much dead for that.
 We the audience dont have a say anymore, its all like boy bands. Made for mass marketing and then thrown away.
Very few movies even have staying power, and if they do ( Star Wars, Lord Of The Rings,,,ugh!) its marketed to death.
 American audiences dont expect alot out of the lame duck studios here, so now they dont have to try hard.
 I talked to someone today that actualy LIKED Pandorum,, and was extoling its virtues.
I figure theyll do this till next week when a new movie comes out and then they will ,,like everyone else in America, forget this was ever made.
