Fortnum & Masons sends me daily emails, usually trying to get me to buy expensive hampers or some such. Today they wished me a happy independence day. That's gracious of them. I don't feel particularly happy about the state of our failed democracy. We have a despot for a leader. The legitimacy of his election has been cast into doubt for any number of reasons. We have gerrymandered districts that ensure the victory of a minority party despite the purported "will of the people." That's a joke. And the legislature is so skewed that they have politicized the judiciary to the point where they're simply a puppet of the GOP. State legislatures continue to pass laws that ensure that women and minorities will not enjoy equal protections.
The ideals set forth in the Declaration of Independence have been subverted. It's a moving document and it would be nice if people were required to read it once a year.
At times, I think we might have been better not seceding. It might have meant lower shipping charges for tea from the UK, at least.
