Someone once pointed out that Americans wear their fanny packs on the front but they call the rear the fanny, and the English wear their fanny packs on the back but they call the front the fanny. Odd phenomenon or stupid observation. You decide.

I have 2  excellent "fanny pack's" as you Americans call them. fantastic name by the way,
 we call them bum bags.
A large Lowe Alpine for hill walking.Another ex Army for cycling.They do the job.
I haven't nor would i wear one for day to day things though.They are  not that common in the uk where i live.
