alot of mainstream movies i notice.
i wouldn't like to put my money on any ,due to the past history of the oscars.

  ?Avatar?   - as much as i hated the movie, the special effects were kick ass

All very valid points. "Best" for me is everything behind the film coming together to be the best it can be. The tech side, creative side, etc. I thought the Hurt Locker was an ok film. It took me 3 sittings to get all the way through it because I found it quite slow so, for me, this was not the "best". But I am but a mere viewer with no film making experience so I guess its not for me to judge.

If the last, then how in the world is the "best" motion picture supposed to be of any interest to anyone outside the academy? I get the distinct impression that with the Oscars, just like most major literary and art prizes, the selection is based on "what do we think that other people think that we should think?", and therefore the votes often go to the stupidest entries instead of the "best".

I like The Hurt Locker, and it's not a bad movie, but in twenty years time people will look back scratching their heads at how such a ground-breaking movie as Avatar got left out.

(Note: I haven't seen Avatar, but I have heard the buzz)

Thanks christ.  I was already completely baffled as to what is the point of Oscars (or any TV/Film awards ceremony) and you have compounded my bewilderment by making less sense of it/them.
