Topic: 1394 Net Adapter

Yes, I should be able to figure this out on my own by now but damn it Im stuck. Extremely long story short, dweez knows about this one, I had a program conflict with windows7 and I just couldnt resolve it SO I have reinstalled XP Pro and everything seem hunky dory until I try to connect to the internet. When I run the diagnostic my results say:

Info: Network connection: Name=1394 connection, Device=1394 net adapter, Media type=LAN, Submediatype=1394

Warn: This machine does not have any installed network adapters. The required network device drivers may not be installed.

I have checked my Network Connections and they read 1394 Connection/Connected/1394 Net Adapter  And when I check the props it says Device is working properly.

What next?

Have you tried reseting  TCP/IP it's what I would try to do, please find instructions below and I hope it helps

Manual method to reset TCP/IP

1 To open a command prompt, click Start and then click Run. Copy and paste (or type) the following command in the Open box and then press ENTER:

2  At the command prompt, copy and paste (or type) the following command and then press ENTER:

netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt

Note If you do not want to specify a directory path for the log file, use the following command:

netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt


3   Reboot the computer.

One of the components of the Internet connection on your computer is a built-in set of instructions called TCP/IP. TCP/IP can sometimes become damaged or corrupted. If you cannot connect to the Internet and you have tried all other methods to resolve the problem, TCP/IP might be causing it.

1394 device is Firewire.  Windows has been considering these "network devices" for quite some time but they aren't really (not unless your cable/dsl modem happens to let you connect to it via firewire like you can connect to most with USB).  Your driver for your actual ethernet/wireless card hasn't been installed yet so you'll need to find out the make/model of your card and download the driver from the Inet via another computer (or maybe you still have the drivers disk for the computer if you bought it pre-built).

Check your Device Manager to see if you have any listed there.  One of them will be the ethernet/wireless card.

The one that says "Ethernet Controller" is what you need a driver for.

It worked for me a few times god you got quite a few drivers missing there

Anyhow Now we can see what the problem is no ethernet controller driver I would get the graphics & sound drivers too. SM bus  controller driver is for your chipset and needs installing imo good luck 

A good reason for fixing the sm bus controller

The SMBus Controller (or system bus controller) is part of the Intel chipset. It monitors your system board's temperature and voltage. Programs that read your hardware sensors need the controller.

So I should be able to go to the Dell website and download the drivers to my external and then load them onto my PC?

Yes if they come zipped then unzip and point the update driver tab to the location where you unzipped them. The odd one will be a EXE. file most likey
the graphics and sound drivers

PS. it's an Intel chipset so can get from intel too

Yeah, typically on a new install, I just make sure I have the ethernet drivers.  Everything else I can download afterwards.  If it's Dell, then the download should be a self-extracting exe and then, from Drivers tab of your Ethernet Controller's properties windows, click on Update Driver and browse the the location of the .inf file that was extracted.

You made me think I got all my drivers on the external which is screwed for now. So need to re download them all in case I go down. Then i would be really screwed. thanks for the wake up call

Just a heads-up but if you are ever uncertain of the exact hardware you need drivers for, this program is fantastic for identifying the exact model and version of whatever hardware is down, and it's free.
