I remember when a friend of mine went up for a philosophy degree, he was asked important questions to see if he was equipped for the course (he actually failed all 3).
I won't bore you with them all, but one of them was:
"Does one man feel pain the same way as another man?"
He apparently fumbled through many answers none of which were close and when he told me this I inadvertently gave him the right answer, which pissed him off a bit concidering he was the 'intellectual'.
I'd said to him: "that's an impossible question as how on earth can you be 2 separate people at any given time?". Apparently that's the truth of it. Although you can wire someone up to see their response to pain, you can never be sure what they are feeling is the same or different to the way someone else feels it.
People think I have a high pain threshold but I don't, I've just learned how to grit my teeth harder.
