Ebay oddities.
« on: January 04, 2012, 07:15:20 AM »
Every now and then I bump into something on Ebay that confuses the hell out of me. Like the £25 Waterstones (Bookshop) gift voucher that sold for £28, or this that I have just been looking at that I can't figure out:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Seagate-ST9750420AS-750GB-SATA-Laptop-Hard-Disk-Drive-/160586585845?pt=UK_Computing_HardDrives_RL&hash=item2563b4d6f5

Why so odd?  Well, here on Amazon it's £850 cheaper:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Seagate-Momentus-ST9750420AS-internal-SATA-300/dp/B004MME0N0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1325684302&sr=8-1

Not only that but they have already sold 9?! I thought it may be for a pack of 10 or something but I can't see that it is. What gives?

The only conclusion I can draw from this is, either they just wait for extremely gullible people to pass by or it's some kind of money laundering operation.

Yeah this is really odd.  I was checking their feedback and there is no sign of any purchases with this sort of high value.  In fact, I saw this previous transaction with them which is still available, that is actually a very good deal:

I don't sell anything on Ebay so I would know for sure, but do they have to set items up separately for mobile view etc?  I ask as I bought some screen protectors for my phone a little while ago and when I looked via my phone app they were £1.85 for 5 with free delivery.  I bought them but as soon as I had the postage went up to £5? I was just about to message them and let rip when I noticed that continuing to the next stop the postage went back to being free.  I can only assume then that cross platform Ebay can screw up how it displays.

The urge to press the "buy it now" button to see what happens, is becoming irresistible.

It's a shame they have a starting bid otherwise I'd have tried to snatch it for 99p as I'm sure no one else would be interested.

Ok, I have another one that is confusing me.

I was looking for a cheap 64gb flash drive and found these that apparently come from Singapore (I think):

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/64GB-USB-Leather-Pen-Thumb-Memory-Flash-Stick-Drive-/110950910199?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19d53088f7

The thing is that the guy only has a feedback of 10, yet it states that 44 of these have already been sold?  That would mean just on this item 34 people couldn't be bothered to leave feedback and he also has another whopping 256gb drive that has sold 14 lots. Another weird thing is that the feedback that has been left is all for the same Nokia battery and by a handful of the same people?

It all looks very suspicious to me.  Can anyone think of legitimate reasons for the anomalies?
