Asus motherboard

 Asus A8N SLI motherboard
Sons pc will turn on and then stops at the bios page.
power is no problem, all fans run.shows the asus start up page and then stops at the bios page
it will recognise that a hdd / dvd player is connected but thats all.
have swapped the sata hdd for a ide hdd.
removed the graphic card and re connected, but nothing changes.
Bios still recognises either hdd and have also tried to boot from cd and still all i get is the bios page.
moved and swapped all connectors, no difference.
changed and alternatively removed and replaced ram.
the hdd is recognized in my hdd caddy ( the partitions are and windows are).
Have never had a pc do this before ??
it is a old motherboard, would this mean the motherboard is knackered.

Is there a bios update for the board?  If so, try that.

Also, just because the fans run it doesn't mean that the PSU isn't shot.  If you have one in an old case you could jerry rig that to see if it improves things.

You could also try loading the bios defaults in the set up page and then saving and rebooting.


Lastly, get a gun and shoot it.

tried the resetting the bios and nothing.
havent tried he psu swap. would it make a difference as the start up bios screen still shows up.

So it is forced into the bios set up no matter what?  It sounds like it is in a POST cycle.  More than likely the motherboard is dead but can you remove everything and run some system tests using Hirens or Vortex Admin tools?

Hiren's Boot DVD 15.1 Restored Edition V 2.0 (PROTEUS) would be my choice.

Or you could try a live CD like Puppy on a CD

Hiren's Mini Windows Xp and Puppy run from RAM. If they display, and your HDDs are OK, it could be a problem with the installed OS. If that's the case possibly reinstalling the OS will fix it. I have used Mini XP to rescue data to a flash drive before reinstalling Windows or chucking a failing hard drive.

You may be able to get a BIOS update here. You didn't mention which OS you are using.

* I would also try only using one stick of RAM. Swap them around to see if one of them is bad.

** You can run MemTest from Hiren's too.

Is it just automatically going into BIOS or when you say "then stops at the BIOS page", do you mean it freezes there?  A freeze would indicate to me that some piece of hardware is failing but it also sounds like you've done your due diligence on the peripheral so it's probably one of the main components (PSU, Mobo, CPU).

The pc freezes at the bios boot page page and refuses to go into windows.
have tried to swap the ram .
Also refuses to boot from cd, so cannot use memtest.

The pc ran Windows 7.

Will have another go at the week end but its confined to the garage  dustbin for pc's i think.

What did you try to boot from the optical drive? It probably won't boot from a bootable flash drive either but you can open UNetbootin, with a flash drive plugged in, and browse to the .iso (Hiren's, Linux LiveCD, Windows...) You would lose anything that's on the flash drive.

Like I mentioned earlier, it sounds like it's in a Power-On-Self-test (post) which is indicative of hardware failure of some sort and it should be impossible for your machine to bypass that.  You need to identify the failure by just running the an optical drive attached to the motherboard and some (reliable) ram. Nothing else - no hard drive, sound card, video card (assuming you have onboard graphics), network card etc.   If you get nada after that, then it's the motherboard and it's off the Ebay we go.

It can be quite difficult to get older motherboards from anywhere in all honesty.  I've found that it's easier to buy a donor machine that has some other kind of problem that is different to yours.

The odd thing I've found about Motherboards on Ebay, is that they sell them "Not working".  Why anyone without a reballer would buy one in that condition (and I've never met anyone who owns a reballer - discounting a foil tray full of spirit) is beyond me.

well its dead as a dodo. wouldn't do anything .
so i decided to use it as a  beer mat for the garage.
salvaged what i could and gave my son an old Desktop running ubuntu.
gave him something to get his teeth into and learn something new.

Have seen some motherboard bundles on novatech / envizage and will look into.although i may have the new one and give him my old set up. who knows

Probably a bit late in on this but with unusual problems such as yours and with Mobo's manufactured prior to 2007 particularly, the first thing to check is the capacitors.

I had the same motherboard kicking around as a spare but saw the capacitors were blown last year when I was going to use it for something.

i have read this somewhere or something similar.

possible the same thing :-\ I have the pc in garage and will strip this weekend and take a peak.

i did boob when i tried to re-plug in the dvd drive ( after it wouldnt work ) it sparked and i think it finally put the nail in the coffin so to speak.
started up again but to no avail.
I then tried another old desktop i had laying around. the psu went bang. then i couldn't load Ubuntu on it , it just booted into the hdd i had  taken from another desktop running Ubuntu  (first time i have ever had this) and worked until i tried to play a movie on it.
finally i re built the first replacement pc and all is well.He is learning Linux instead of just gaming. :) :)
he now wants a apple desktop  :'( :'( .
