How do you start going about this sort of thing? It may well be something I'd like to try in the future.

First of all: WOW!!  You are my hero, aelthric!  I've been dreaming of doing something like that since high school with a friend of mine. We're both mums with children now. Maybe when we get older we'll do it.

I believe they're siloxanes. They act as surfactants preventing foam originated by sugars that remain in the liquid (remnants that haven't been fermented) to go up and into the coils.
But I could be wrong so don't quote me.

I'm confused. While researching the items listed it appears that you cannot distil any spirit at without a licence due to health and safety issues (like I believe that).  I couldn't find any limits or other domestic loopholes that allow it.

Not that I particularly care what the law says about what I "privately" should and shouldn't be doing in my home, but if the risk of combustion is quite high then I can understand why they wouldn't want the winos around the corner doing this recreationally.

Now I understand why pirates are pirates.

I read in the U.S (Dakota) it is a flat $100 a year.

£26.81 per litre seems a bit steep considering how much cheap and nasty spirits cost in supermarkets....

Mind you they are generally only 35 - 40% alcohol which comes to £9.38 at 35% per litre and since I have seen bottles for as little as £15 per litre sort of makes me wonder how these supermarket chains can do it at those prices...

The Dakotas are notorious for being culturally conservative.  I don't think you'd like it there.  I think Vodka is a much broader category of spirit than rum.  Vodka can be made from wheat, potatoes, all kinds of stuff.  I always thought rum was derived from sugar cane plants.  I stumbled on this site recently  http://www.ministryofrum.com/

As to the legal position of this distilling, any person in the UK can produce 2500 litres of "Bio Fuel Ethanol" before they require either a distillers license or need to pay duty and since I own a trangia (An alcohol burning camping stove) and it works with this distillate very well we will from this point be referring to the rum / vodka as "BIO FUEL"
