we had corn that was almost ready, and today a squrriel ate all 7 ears of corn and he was rather smug about it as he sat on the neighbors fence eating a kernal of corn while he looked me in the eye. Then he calmly jumped to near by tree branch while I called him all sorts of vile names. He waited until I went back into the house and then came back to make sure he got ever last kernal.

damn squrriels.

Get some really hot cayenne pepper and sprinkle it on the corn husks.  They don't like it.  Once they burn their little tongues a couple times, they'll avoid the corn.  You have to reapply it after the rains, though.

The cabbage head was probably devoured by the larvae of some moth, i.e. a caterpillar.  I'm not sure how aggressive you want to be in terms of pest control, or if you are averse to chemicals.  My parents swore by Sevin.  http://www.gardentech.com/Learn/FAQs

I don't either, but I never know what other people might do, so I suggested it.  Cayenne is about as radical as I get.  Here's some info about what might be causing the damage.  Frankly, sometimes, picking the little buggers off the plants is about as an effective cure as you can manage.  Larvae of various insects often, in caterpillar form, are really destructive.  http://www.clemson.edu/extension/hgic/pests/plant_pests/veg_fruit/hgic2203.html
