I don't think that a felon is allowed to run, here.

I blame the internet.

He'd run anyway.

Honestly, I truly blame the internet.

I was listening to this really insightful analysis of the shift in British politics that mirrors what's happening in the U.S.  Hopefully, you can get it to stream there.  https://www.newyorker.com/podcast/the-new-yorker-radio-hour/is-being-a-politician-the-worst-job-in-the-world

I'm currently repairing the Minister of State for Security's roof. Two things I have to avoid are: talking politics and red dots appearing on my overalls when I'm up on high.

Wow.  Did you have to get security clearance to do that?

No. I was recommended and his wife rang me directly.

They live local and are very nice people. I visited to assess the work and his wife did say that there were cameras all over the property which I assume are MI5 or similar. It then struck me when I was on the roof that it could look like I was "going in". I mentioned to the scaffolder to let me know if he saw any little red dots appear on me and I'd put my hands up. We were laughing about it really, so don't take me too seriously.

Generally speaking MPs are just regular people living in regular houses. In this case though, as Mr Tugendhat is no fan of Russia or China, his security is beefed up.

I suppose I'd have to add Novichok to the things I have to avoid.

Maybe put it in Things that made me laugh today?

It's horribly hot here.  We are supposed to have thunderstorms tonight so the temps will come down.  We are sitting in front of the fan.

The debate was not fun.  Lying madman vs grandpa with a cold and a stutter.  Moderators did no fact checking so Trump was free to lie his ass off, which he did with the usual ranting bluster.  Biden is a smart and capable politician but he came off as past it, so we are all living in fear of having another repeat of Agent Orange.  Lord help us.

With AI in tandem with social media meddling with just about every aspect of life, it's only going to get worse. Far worse. You might even end up with Nigel Farage as your president.

I could quite happily move to a country without the interweb. I'd have to do like you then, six, and pick up a book again.

I've been reading lots this summer.  But the day after the debate, as the major news papers were pleading with Biden not to run again, he came out like a prizefighter in North Carolina to cheering crowds.  Like there was something in that airless room that froze him in place.  Maybe it was the firehose of endless and utterly obvious lies coming from the ConMan to his left that stopped him.  Maybe he was on decongestants.  Who can say?  But it was a terrible night for him.

From today's New York Times, gluttony update:
Quote
Hot Dog Eating Contest Crowns Patrick Bertoletti as New Men’s Champion
Mr. Bertoletti emerged as the winner after the 16-time champion Joey Chestnut was barred from the July 4 spectacle. In the women’s contest, Miki Sudo ate 51 hot dogs, a record....
Patrick Bertoletti, 26, from Chicago, snagged the men’s title — or, in the parlance of Coney Island, the Mustard Belt — by eating 58 hot dogs in 10 minutes.
...
“With Joey not here I knew I had a shot,” he added, in reference to Mr. Chestnut. “I was able to unlock something and I don’t know where it came from.”

Indeed, despite his absence, Mr. Chestnut loomed large over Thursday’s proceedings. He was forced to part ways with the contest last month after he signed an endorsement deal with Impossible Foods, a rival to Nathan’s that makes vegan hot dogs.

Many viewers tuned in year after year just to watch Mr. Chestnut go through a pile of hot dogs like a wood chipper. News of his departure from the contest was met with the sort of public anguish one might expect for a major-league baseball player, not a man who ate 62 hot dogs in 10 minutes last July 4.

Do they have such eating contests in the UK or is it just a weird American thing?

I've never had Nathan's. Hebrew National sure, they're good dogs brent. But Nathans have always been nearly double the price of any other brand.

Joey should have seen the writing on the wall after Kobayashi. I find the competition fascinating, but I hate watching anyone eat.
