I'm really sorry, goldie.  It's really hard to say goodbye to a beloved pet.

It sounds like the alternative is to let him experience extended suffering.  You are doing the best thing for him out of the best motivations.  Don't feel bad about making that choice.  I'm sure that you gave him a loving home and I'd focus on that.

I hope my family do the same for me when I need it.

(... but not before then!)

Pretty sure you'll outlive your family. Barring the big man/thing.

I was in Los Angeles this week and there was a huge fire (4000 acres) burning in the mountains around Malibu -- the Franklin Fire.  I drove down to see a friend in Santa Monica, directly south of there.  On the way home on the San Diego freeway (405) a second fire was burning right up to the highway and there was a looming wall of smoke filling the sky to the west that went on for miles.  It was unnerving.  This was really close to the Getty Center (big art museum complex) and near Brentwood (a prosperous enclave made famous by the OJ Simpson murders).  The fire dept is making slow progress, so it's now 30% contained.  Up from 6% when I left.  Thankfully it's raining now, so I hope that helps a bit.

It's been raining and cold here so the ants are coming in to find something to eat.  I spray them with Windex.  It kills them and cleans the floor at the same time.  It's basically blue ammonia.  Once I tried to sprinkle cinnamon around to dissuade them and it not only didn't bother the ants, but it stained the floor, so that was a completely stupid idea.  Someone suggested it on a local bulletin board.  All of my ant attractive food is in ziploc bags or hermetically sealed jars.  It's annoying to have to live defensively like this but that's life.  There's a billion of them and one of me.  They can get their own food outside somewhere.  There's still fruit on trees and then there's compost bins where they like to hang out.

Not sure I'd ever eat the communal anything. Ever.

Hope you are all better by Christmas.
In the northeastern U.S. the weather is super cold.  We had snow on Thursday so that didn't help.  Still people act like the stores will soon stop selling food and anything else.  The parking lots (car parks) are all full.  I need frozen cherries for duck breast with cherry sauce, so I have to go out but I tend to shop and park where there are less people.  Still there's running around to do for last minute errands and I have not yet started to bake Xmas cookies.  At least I got some Xmas cards in the mail.

Sharing, not communal.

Sharing, not communal.

Pretty sure that 7 loaves and 2 fish being "shared" between 5000 would involve at least some regurgitation.
