City of Ember - I thought it was a decent little flick, especially for what looks like a kids' adventure flick along the lines of
The Golden Compass or
The Last Mimzy, or something - though I think it is based on a novel.
Some cataclysm befalls the surface of the world and so it is decided 'for the good of mankind' to store society underground in an electric and machine driven city called Ember. Once there, all knowledge of life outside the city would be erased, the people would basically be imprisoned, though through conditioning (and eventually time) they'd never notice. The original builders did leave instructions on how to leave the city, but they are sealed into a box with a time-release: 200 years later.
Over time the box is lost and ultimately trying to leave becomes a crime and the Mayor, the most powerful person in the city, wants to keep it that way. Despite the fact that the city is falling into complete disrepair endangering everyone.
Two kids learn that a group of people in the past had tried to leave he city, so they attempt it themselves.
I generally like Tim Robbins and Bill Murray, so that didn't hurt. Some special effects are cool, others are pretty mediocre. But overall I liked the allegory in the story.
Disclaimer: Lately, I've had more people tell me they haven't liked movies I've recommended to them, than have - so you've been warned.
